African Diaspora for Obama celebrates the success of their efforts to elect Barack Obama as the 44th President of the United States. Formed in June 2008, the group attracted members and organizers from all walks of life, including many who were new to the political process, but strongly believed in the abilities of Barack Obama to lead the country for the next four years.

African Diaspora for Obama changes its name to African Diaspora for Change (ADC) to reflect the new focus of the organization and its shift from working to get President-Elect Barack Obama into office, to creating an alliance of African Diaspora voices representing the common concerns as a constituency in the U.S. and affecting change through education, empowerment and engagement of the next generation of leaders.

The Batonga Foundation
—founded by Grammy Award winning artist, Angelique Kidjo—is chosen as a beneficiary for the African Diaspora Inaugural Ball. The organization provides primary and secondary education for young girls in Africa. First Book—a nonprofit the distributes new books to low-income communities—is selected as the second beneficiary for the Inaugural Ball. The selection of the two organizations represents ADC's commitment to affecting change both in Africa and America.

African Diaspora for Change partners with Africa Aspire to present "Aspiring for Change: A Three-Day Inaugural Celebration of the African Diaspora." Slated to take place during Inaugural week, the celebration includes a kick-off inaugural celebration on Sunday, January 18 at the Harman Center for the Arts; an afternoon Symposium to discuss what issues the Diaspora would like to see the Obama Administration prioritize in Africa; and a closing event at the Museum of African Art. Details to be announced.

Les Nubians
to be featured as guest performers for the African Diaspora Inaugural Ball. The singing sisters made headlines in 1998 with their debut album and have a worldwide following. Their appearance at the African Diaspora Inaugural Ball is much anticipated and will promote their upcoming album.
